In our last episode (Ep 004) we explored Coronavirus (COVID-19) and the restrictions that Indians need to be aware of when planning to study abroad.  It was popular with our listeners, but we received many comments from those who are already studying abroad who wanted some information on how they could cope with the Coronavirus guidelines and restrictions.

We grouped our thoughts into 5 areas and used “COVID” as an acronym to help you remember them. Listen to the episode to hear our top tips and strategies to cope with the lockdowns, restrictions and guidance, and how to cope with these alongside your studies.

To manage COVID-19 Coronavirus restrictions when you study abroad, we recommend you follow these 6 steps. Its advice you can not afford to ignore.

Covid-19 (Coronavirus) is still with us and when recording this episode (October 2020) a vaccine looks like it is still a few months or even a year away; as a result, many countries are adopting various measures in an attempt to reduce infections.

These include full and partial lockdowns, tier systems and other local measures.  They can be very confusing, and we have all seen how they have changed quickly and frequently as we all attempt to deal with this new disease.

Despite what we think about the measures, we all need to understand and abide by them, and this is particularly important for Indian students wishing to study abroad as they are in place for everyone’s safety.  Failing to follow these could also result in you being made to pay a fine or being removed from your university course or programme of study.

In this episode, we outline 6 areas for you to consider that will help you plan for your studies abroad.  To manage covid-19 restrictions when studying abroad, we recommend you do the following 6 things:

  1. Understand the restrictions/rules and abide by them
  2. Consider what to pack before travelling
  3. Plan your studies when you actually get there
  4. Make friends when studying remotely
  5. Make the most of your time in the host country by planning your time
  6. Stay healthy and register with a physician or a GP

Whilst the application process is becoming easier and a number of universities and government bodies are providing more support for you in the way of online advice, there are still a few key things that you need to do to make sure your application to study abroad is noticed and that you are accepted on to the course of your choice.

In this episode we outline the 5 questions you need to answer in your application to study abroad to ensure it stands out from the rest and that you are offered a place.

One of the areas that top universities will judge your application on is your personal statement.  Your personal statement is the section in the application where you essentially sell yourself to the university and let them know why they should offer you one of their limited places on their programmes.  Whilst the number of places on courses has generally increased across the world, there are some courses where applications outnumber the places available.

To ensure your application to study on a programme is noticed and secures you one of the limited places available, consider these five questions when writing your personal statement.

Exciting times for students wishing to study overseas and for us – our podcast trailer is now live and will give you a taste of what we’ll cover in our shows.

With over 40 years of combined knowledge and experience of working with students from India and other countries, we have helped hundreds of students to study abroad. We’ve worked with students both during the application and admissions process, we have taught them on their undergraduate and postgraduate programmes and supported them to find employment once they have graduated.

Our podcast – The Indian’s Guide to Studying Abroad – and the accompanying resources on our website www.TheStudyAbroadShow.com will help to guide and direct you at whatever stage in your educational journey you are at:

  • the application stage,
  • already studying abroad or
  • if you have completed your studies and are now looking for employment.

In our shows we’ll provide you with advice, strategies and tips that will help you with each stage of your journey.

If you’re thinking of studying abroad and are wondering how to find the best course or university for you, how to apply, and what to say in your application or are interested in understanding how studying abroad differs from studying in India, and how you can secure employment once you have graduated – this podcast will be for you.

Drawing on our own experience, as well as those of our guests, we’ll provide you with all the steps you need to successfully apply and study abroad, and we’ll outline what action you’ll need to take at each stage. If you are a student already studying abroad, you’ll find our study skills of great value as they will help you manage your studies, and if you are near graduation or have graduated, you’ll enjoy our shows that focus on securing employment and building your career.

There are three things you’ll need to do to get the most out of our podcast.

  1. Firstly, make sure you listen to the episodes in order as each show builds on the other, but you can jump in and out – and relisten to shows to ensure you have made the most of every tip we have to share.
  2. Secondly, you should subscribe to our newsletter and download our FREE ‘study abroad checklist’ – this is our master guide that is going to walk you through every step of the process and will help you take your idea of studying abroad and make it a reality and ensure you have a successful experience when you do so. You can download the guide by entering your details in the pop-up box that appears on the website, or by registering for our newsletter.
  3. Thirdly, you should subscribe to our channel on your podcast listening platform of choice, so you can hear about new episodes as soon as they are released.

The podcast is hosted by Dr Ranjit Khutan and Professor Tony Stewart; we’ll share more about us and our backgrounds during our podcasts, but for now, here’s a short introduction:

Dr Ranjit Khutan has worked in senior academic roles in higher education in the UK for over 20 years and is currently Head of Department at a leading UK university.

Professor Tony Stewart has also worked in senior academic roles in higher education in the UK for over 20 years and is currently in a senior academic role at the same leading UK university, with professorial roles at other universities.

Our earlier shows were recorded in late summer 2020 but due to Covid-19 and the many changes that took place in academia, there was a short delay in getting these out to you. However, they are now available on Apple iTunes, Spotify, Google, Stitcher, Overcast, YouTube and many other podcast platforms – check to see if we’re listed on your listening platform of choice and get in touch if we’re not.

Finally, we hope you enjoy the shows, and do get in touch with your comments and suggestions for topics you’d like us to cover in the future.

Until we meet,

Dr Ranjit Khutan & Professor Tony Stewart
